The significance of Mala Beads

The significance of Mala Beads

Mala Beads have been used in Buddhist and Hindu prayer ceremonies and meditation for centuries. The term ‘mala’ is a Sanskrit word for “meditation garland.” Originally, mala beads were used for a special style of meditation called Japa, which means, “to recite.” They are typically used to aid in counting the number of repetitions of mantras or phrases. There are typically 108 in a string, and there is usually a decorative tassel on the end of the strand, sometimes adorned further with embellishments or amulets. The mala’s beads that can be made of seeds, sandalwood or rosewood, or gemstones.

The 109th stone, or the guru stone, symbolizes gratitude and our connection to the divine. It is a way to say thank-you to all the spiritual teachers who have helped us on our path to enlightenment. The symbolism of mala doesn’t stop here, many feel that the tassel also has an underlying meaning related to how many strands come together as one, a deeper message of unity and oneness.

Mala Bead Necklaces

Mala Beads

When it comes to wearing mala beads, they are fast becoming a fashion statement in the bohemian style. The tassel will hang low when worn as a necklace, so pair it with a shorter necklace and possibly even a choker. You can enhance their power when worn in conjunction with your gemstone pieces. Even consider looking for gemstones for added energy and healing properties. It’s a common belief that when malas are used regularly for mantra meditation, they absorb the vibrations of the practice. So the more you meditate using a mala, the more energy it absorbs and reflects back onto you when worn.

Wearing Mala Beads

When wearing, there are a few rules to keep in mind. Firstly, it is not appropriate for your beads, either necklaces or bracelets, to ever touch the ground. Also, make sure that you are cleansing your rosary periodically, or when you feel like there has been a lot of negative energy around you. You can balance out the energy, and recharge them, by placing them in the direct light of the sun for an entire day, or the moon overnight along with your gemstones and crystals.

Get your hands on your own meditation garland and help clear the mind and form intentions.

Not into meditation? These beaded strands bring a natural, bohemian look to any apparel. These beaded accessories are definitely a conversation piece and very trendy.
