Mala Beads have been used in Buddhist and Hindu prayer ceremonies and meditation for centuries. The term ‘mala’ is a Sanskrit word for “meditation garland.” Originally, mala beads were used for a special style of meditation called Japa, which means, “to recite.” They are typically used to aid in counting the number of repetitions of mantras or phrases.
